Don't Burn Waipa (DBW) is a community group formed to oppose the building of a proposed rubbish burning incinerator in Te Awamutu with a potential lifespan of some 30 years.
The company behind the incinerator proposal has lodged consent applications with Waikato Regional Council and Waipa District Council. Both councils have asked the NZ Government to determine the decision making process, as they deem this to be of national significance.
This incinerator will burn over 450 tonnes of waste each day - more waste than Waipa produces - so waste would be imported into the town, by truck. Such a plant would have issues of toxic ash disposal (approximately 22 tonnes a day) from burning plastic, tyres and waste, producing dioxins and carbon dioxide emissions amongst other hazards and environmental risks. Potential dioxin contamination of surrounding dairy farmland is likely to create serious issues for Te Awamutu and also for New Zealand Eg export market/reputation damage.
